Education and Training

Raphael S. F. Longobardi, MD, graduated from Fordham University in 1986 with a B.S in Biology, Summa Cum Laude. He attended New York University School of Medicine, where he received his degree in Medicine in 1990. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at NYU Medical Center, as well as, an orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at the Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Professional Experience

Dr. Longobardi is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and athletic injuries. In 1996, he started in a private practice, with offices at NYU Medical Center and in Teaneck, NJ. In April 2004, he relocated his office to Continental Plaza in Hackensack, NJ. From November 2011-March 2022, his practice was employed by Holy Name Medical Center, and he served as their Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. There he developed the Total Joint Center of Excellence Program for CMS, as well as, their Sports Medicine Program. From April 1, 2022- October 28, 2022, he was employed by Atlantic Health Service as Director of Sports Medicine. On October 31, 2022, to present, he became employed by RWJ Barnabas Health.

He has authored various articles and presentations related to the shoulder and knee, both nationally and internationally.

Academic Contributions

He has been actively teaching at NYU School of Medicine and is currently a faculty member of the NYU Langone Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery. He has been a Faculty Mentor to the students of NYU School of Medicine for their Professionalism course, as well as, being an active member of the Admissions Committee for NYU School of Medicine since 1998. Due to years of dedicated service and commitment to medical education, in May 2009, he was named, and remains, a member of NYU School of Medicine’s Board of Governors.

At his alma mater, Fordham University, Dr. Longobardi has participated as a member of the Dean’s Pre-Health Advisory Board and Science Council, since 2000. He also participates as a Mentor for Fordham University Pre-Medical/Pre-Health students where they have had the opportunity to participate in practice and surgical observation. As a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit National Honor Society, since 1985, Dr. Longobardi was elected to their Board of Trustees in October 2018.

Community Engagement

Since 2008, Dr. Longobardi has collaborated with Bergen Academies High School in Hackensack, New Jersey mentoring high school students with a focus and interest in medicine. Part of that program is a surgical and practice observation.

Team Physician Experience (Collegiate and Professional Sports)

Dr. Longobardi has had the privilege to care for numerous collegiate and professional sports teams. His experience ranges from being an assistant team physician with the NY Islanders Hockey Team, University of Tennessee athletic teams, Minor League (AA) Baseball and Hockey Teams (ECHL), to Team Physician for the NY-NJ MetroStars (MLS), and then as an Assistant Team Physician/Consultant with the Florida Marlins Baseball Team (MLB)(The 2003 World Series Champions). Most recently, Dr. Longobardi served as the Team Physician for the 2009 New Jersey-Northeast High School All-Star Classic Football Game. Also, from 2010-2020, he has served a team physician for Bergen Catholic High School’s Athletic programs. He remains an independent consultant for the University of Tennessee Sports Teams, along with NFL, MLB and MLS teams, the NFLPA, as well as collegiate and professional players independently.
